The idea of an outdoor pizza oven, made from castable materials was born from an idea to diversify products currently offered by our parent company JRH Harvey & Co Ltd.
When researching materials we took into consideration the need for our product to be suitable to withstand high temperatures, to be easy to maintain and to have a robust industrial look.
The Dome Pizza Oven is made from materials which allow it to reach temperatures of 1000oF / 540oC safely. As with all concrete based products it will naturally expand and contract with heat, what this means is that you may see some hairline cracks but they will not affect the performance of your pizza oven.
The Dome Pizza Oven is reinforced with steel strands and care should always be exercised when moving your pizza oven to its location. You must ALWAYS wear protective gloves to provide defence against any small protruding strands of steel.
The materials used to form the Dome Pizza Oven have some insulating properties and therefore should stay warm for a reasonable period of time. Of course this will depend upon how much wood you are using, the weather conditions (if your oven isn’t protected from the elements) and if you are using a door to retain heat etc.
The Dome Pizza Oven comes complete with flu and door. The Dome should be secured to the base and sealed using a high heat resistant adhesive and we can supply this if required.
If you wish to have your oven delivered (a delivery charge can be advised and is dependent on location) Marc will be happy to bring along our adhesive and seal for you. If we are delivering, we would require clear, flat access to the area where you wish to position your oven, with a minimum clearance of 1400 to allow us to manoeuvre into place.
Your oven will cook the most delicious pizzas. We have tried making our own from scratch and when we have a lot of people over we buy frozen pizzas from The Meat Merchant in Moira although we are sure other suppliers are available!!
We have also made our own naan bread, cooked steaks, chicken tikka kebabs, even made s’mores (not exactly cooking but the kids loved them!).
How do I light the Dome Pizza Oven for the first time?
The oven must be “cured” prior to use, this will involve lighting a small fire in the centre of the Dome and allowing it to burn for a minimum of 3 hours. You will notice water / steam coming from the Dome. Continue burning, until this has evaporated. Your pizza oven is now ready to use.
Can I personalise my pizza oven?
Yes, whilst the pizza oven will perform perfectly well as it is, we recognise that some of our customers wish to further insulate and personalise their ovens by using for example mosaic tiles. For this reason we have left a skirt around the dome / base to allow you space to do that. We are currently in the process of customising our oven and will post pictures of this process when this is complete.
If you wish to customise your oven we can provide an insulating blanket, mesh, refractory cement and grout – you just need to select some mosaic tiles, or perhaps small pebbles and let your imagination run wild! Phone for a price.
Like all concrete products the Dome will absorb water and what this means, is that if your oven is wet it will take longer to get to temperature as it burns off the “free water”. To negate this issue, we would recommend either covering your Dome or erecting a shelter to protect it against rain and snow whilst also allowing smoke to easily disperse.
What do you need to do before receiving delivery of your Dome?
We would recommend building a plinth to hold the Dome. As you will see from our images, we built a block rectangle 1000mm (wide at the front) x 1200mm (length) and plastered it and then stone chipped it. What you can’t see is that we also built in a supporting wall down the middle and then filled with rubble before smoothing a heat resistant mortar on top, we also put an insulating board under our oven to enable longer heat retention and then placed our Dome Pizza Oven on top. We are currently modifying a mobile stand for our Dome Pizza Oven which is nearly complete and we will have a price for that coming soon (if this would be of interest to anyone). In its current form we use it to transport our ovens to shows like the Love Your Home Exhibition and Balmoral Show which we are taking a stand at for the first time this year!
What items would I need to consider buying to make full use of my Dome Pizza Oven?
We would recommend, Pizza Paddle, Pizza Turner, Infra Red thermometer, Cast Iron Skillet (for cooking those delicious steaks). We use the fantastic Babadoh (local NI company) to carry/prove our dough and ingredients – check them out on www.babadoh.com.
